Are Treadmills Bad for You?

Source of the original article at here Savitar’s Foot

Almost every fitness plan should include cardio workout. In general, cardio or cardiovascular exercise is any movement that will raise your heart rate and increase your blood circulation.

There are many methods and forms of cardio exercises which have specific benefits for you and your health. However, most people are doing it in order to lose calories and burn fat.

If you go to the gym, you will probably use a treadmill for your cardiovascular exercise, especially if you’re a beginner.

Treadmill is one of the most commonly used machines at the gym. However, many people say that nothing compares to outdoor running. Moreover, they also say that it is less effective and can cause injuries. Is running on a treadmill bad for you and your health? Join me as I discuss this everlasting debate, the advantages and disadvantages of treadmills and how to get the most out of it.

Running on a treadmill can be done almost anytime and anywhere

The big advantage of running on a treadmill in comparison to outdoor running is that you can do it almost anytime and anywhere. You don’t have to worry about the weather or what time of day it is. All you need to do is find the time and get on a treadmill.

However, because you are doing it in a closed environment, you won’t get Vitamin D. The synthesis of vitamin D is Sun dependent. Outside running on a sunny day will not only get you fit, but you will also synthesize more vitamin D for your bones and other tissues. Bone strength is really important, especially for runners and other athletes.

Running on a treadmill gives more control

As I’ve previously mentioned, most people do cardio workouts for fat burn. However, if you want to lose calories and burn fat, you need to achieve a certain heart rate. This is where the treadmill is more helpful than other forms of running.

Most treadmills today have heart rate monitors which will help you achieve the appropriate heart rate for fat burning. Moreover, newer treadmills already have built-in different programs that will help you achieve your goal.

Treadmill allows you to control your workout and it is much easier to define goals. You can change your speed, incline and duration of a workout. That way you will always fit your workout in the timeframe that is available to you.

In the past, many people were running on a treadmill for hours without having results. Today, many researchers showed that having shorter workout with the change of intensity is more effective than the previously mentioned workout. You will burn calories and fat not only when you’re on a treadmill but also after you’ve finished your workout. This is where treadmills are especially helpful.

When using treadmill, you can alternate between high intensity intervals with faster speed and/or incline and low intensity periods of recovery.

Treadmills are more forgiving in comparison to other forms of running

When it comes to running injuries, there is less possibility of getting them while running on a treadmill. On the treadmill, you run on a belt which is totally flat and much better shock absorber. Better shock absorption means less strain on your joints and therefore less risk for sports injury.

However, that doesn’t mean that there is no strain on your knees and joints. Running on any type of surface is a weight-bearing activity which always puts certain amount of stress on your muscles, tendons and joints. That is why you should always warm up and stretch before any exercise.

Having proper fitting shoes for running on a treadmill is also important for injury-free running. If you’re not sure what shoes you should buy, I’ve already made a list of best shoes for treadmill.

Most common running injuries are knee, ankle and Achilles tendon injuries. However, there are simple Achilles tendon and other taping techniques which can lower the risk for these types of injuries.

Always start slow and steady when you run on a treadmill. Although there is less risk for sports injuries, you can always slip and fall of a treadmill if you run too fast and your legs give up.

Is treadmill running easier than other forms of running?

When you run outside, there is a wind resistance which adds more oxygen consumption, making this form of running harder and more effective. Running on a treadmill lacks this wind resistance. That is why many people believe that running on a treadmill is less difficult and effective.

However, that is not entirely true. Recent studies showed that adding a small amount of incline on a treadmill will result in same oxygen consumption as outdoor running. Therefore, adding a certain amount of incline on your treadmill will make this type of running just as effective as outdoor running.

Is altered treadmill running gait cycle its advantage or disadvantage?

It’s been known for some time that treadmill running can alter your usual running gait cycle. The primary difference between usual and treadmill running gait cycle is the number of strides and certain muscle groups activation. In order to understand the difference, you should know the basics of normal gait cycle.

The gait cycle has two main phases – the stance phase and the swing phase. The stance phase makes two thirds of the gait cycle while the rest is the swing phase. Stance phase begins with the heel strike and ends with toe off. The swing phase begins with toe off and ends with heel strike.

In normal gait cycle, you provide the propulsion and move your body forward. The quadriceps and hamstring muscles have key part in the swing phase along with other muscles.

However, when you run on a treadmill, the treadmill motor is moving the ground for you. This propulsion of the belt will help you finish the stride and lift your legs, resulting in lower usage of hamstring muscles. That is why you should also do additional workout for the muscles on the back of the leg, especially glutes and hamstrings.

When running on a treadmill, the foot spends more time in contact with the treadmill belt. This is done in order to stay balanced. Moreover, the feet are flatter on contact, absorbing more shock and less risk for the injury.

However, there are some advantages of a treadmill, especially for those who recently suffered from sports injury. Having more contact with the surface and flatter feet will offload the tendons, muscles and joints, which is great for those who had injury and need to gradually get to their previous form.

Although the treadmill provides more cushion and shock absorption, you don’t get the benefit of uneven terrain. Even when you think that the ground outside is flat, it isn’t actually. This is good for proprioception – knowing the position of body parts in space. In order to adapt to surfaces, joints and muscles are making small adjustments. These adjustments improve coordination and balance for running and other everyday activities.

Conclusion

Many people still question the effectiveness of running on a treadmill in comparison to outdoor running. There are some disadvantages that reject people to use a treadmill, especially runners and athletes. The alteration of running gait cycle, the loss of coordination and balance and slowing down your outdoor running are some of the most referred disadvantages of treadmill.

However, in the last couple of years, newer treadmills tried to correct some of the previously mentioned disadvantages. Today there are advanced treadmills that allow you to create your own course and simulate that exact course you are training for. Moreover, you can choose a certain trail or terrain and prepare for a race on the exact terrain.

These newer, more advanced treadmills are more expensive. However, there are also cheaper options available that will usually give you similar or same results as the more expensive. You can check my list of best treadmills under $500 that I’ve made for this site.

Another con that is usually mentioned by regular people is that running on a treadmill can be boring. I understand that running on a sunny day and looking at the surrounding scenery is more pleasing than running on a treadmill in a closed environment. However, people who live in places that are too cold or too hot usually don’t have the opportunity to experience that. They need to find the alternative and running on a treadmill is a great option. Moreover, you can always switch up your workout and get excited again.

Running on a treadmill is definitely not bad for you and your health. Sure, there are some disadvantages, but any exercise is good for your health. Treadmills are even more safe for you and your health.

Both running on a treadmill and outside are great workouts. Of course, they both have their pros and cons that should be considered when you decide which type of running should you do. My recommendation is that you do both of them. That way you will not get bored and will eliminate all disadvantages that both forms of running have.

I hope that with this text you’ve learned more about running on a treadmill, its advantages and disadvantages and finally found out that it is not bad for you and you shouldn’t worry.

Size and space considerations

Treadmill size is determined by the space you will use for the workout. Before you start your researching, measure how much available floor space you have, and storage space if you want to buy a foldable treadmill. The treadmill belt size can also affect the total footprint of the unit. The most standard size to aim for is 20” wide belt, both for runners and walkers, but 22” is considered to be preferred for runners because it leaves more place for errors.

As for the length of the belt, 50” is the minimum for walkers, while 55” is minimum for runners. However, if you are a runner over 6’ tall, you should look for 60” long belt.

A standard home treadmill is about 3’ wide and 7’ long. Foldable treadmills are also a good idea, especially if you don’t want to clutter your home when you are not working out.

Best shoes for treadmill walking

How will you work out?

The intensity of your workout also has an impact on the choice of your treadmill. It is not the same if you want to do long easy walks or if you are training for half marathon on treadmill. This is especially important for your desired motor power. If you are planning heavy exercises, you should focus on finding a powerful motor. As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, the intensity of your exercising also affects the length and the width of the belt.

The most important features a treadmill should have

When you are buying a treadmill, you need to research every product thoroughly to discover all the essential elements you need. I’ll mention some features I consider to be the most important, and later I’ll write about some additional ones that you might want to have.

Training for half marathon on treadmill

  • Straightforwardly maneuverable console and a screen with a precise digital readout. You don’t want to come home with your treadmill and only then figure out you don’t know how to navigate the console. All the buttons and commands should have an intuitive sense.
  • Shock absorption system: Walking or running on a deck that feels unstable or spongy isn’t only awkward, it also puts you in risk of knee injuries and tends to worn out quickly. Too firm surface resembling an asphalt is also flawed. The deck should feel stable, yet comfortable. For that, you should check whether the product has some sort of cushioning and how it works.
  • A good motor. Don’t fall for “the bigger, the better” rhetoric. What sufficient for just about any user is a 2.0 and above continuous duty HP motor, that is if the other components of the treadmill are of good quality. An efficient cooling mechanism can reduce the heat on the motor and thus extend its life. A strong motor with a poor cooling mechanism is a bad combination that can result in wear and tear.
  • A durable belt should be at least two-ply.
  • Motivating electronic features. This might sound unclear, but there is an explanation. Electronic features such as customizable specific user ID, quick start functions, and interval programs can be challenging and can grow with you as you progress.

Additional features to consider

How to oil a treadmill

While special features aren’t essential for basic cardio training, they can contribute to the total workout experience. Which ones you will choose depends entirely on your fitness goals and how you are planning on meeting them. If there are some extras that you think it will remain unused, there aren’t worth paying more money for the machine. Here are some additional features I consider to be the most useful:

  • The automated incline makes exercise more challenging and interesting, but also allows faster calorie burning and is easier on your knees.
  • Built-in workout programs can be useful for beginners.
  • Wireless pulse monitors can make your workout more efficient because they provide you with accurate heart rate data.
  • Water bottle holder can come in handy, so you don’t have to get down on the treadmill each time you feel thirsty

You should be aware that buying a treadmill includes making an abundance of other decisions, such as finding the best shoes for treadmill, devising a workout program and finding your motivation to exercise at home. All of these tasks depend entirely on you. As for the best treadmills, here are five of them that meet the most important conditions for a quality workout machine.

1. Sunny Health & Fitness SF-T4400 – Great for Beginners

Via Amazon.com

View Product On Amazon

Sunny Health & Fitness treadmill offers a lot of value for the price. The first thing you will notice in this unit is the large panel with a large LCD that enables you a clear insight into your training. It includes buttons for controlling nine workout programs and three available incline positions.

The additional features are pretty satisfactory, and they include cup holders on both sides, as well as phone tablet holder. The running surface is 15.75 x 48.82, and the motor is 2.20 Peak HP. The treadmill runs smoothly. The folding mechanism is pretty easy, so you can store the unit anywhere when you are not using it.

On the downside, this is a high-maintenance product. Most treadmills require one oiling a year, while this one should be lubricated in average on every three months. Also, the running area is a bit narrow, and not even the best shoes for treadmill can make running comfortable. The handles are not of very good quality.

Pros

  • checkLarge LCD panel and easily navigable controls
  • checkSpeed controls located on the handles
  • checkPhone holder and two cup holders
  • checkIt runs smoothly

Cons

  • exclamation-triangleIt is not suitable for tall people
  • exclamation-triangleThe narrow running belt is a bit narrow
  • exclamation-triangleIt is more comfortable for walking than for running
  • exclamation-triangleIt requires a lot of maintenance

2. Weslo Cadence G 5.9 – Good Value for the Money

Via Amazon.com

View Product On Amazon

Like the previous product, Weslo Cadence G 5.9 can fold to save space. The adjustable incline has two positions, and the treadmill has six workout programs. The cushioning makes walking and running more comfortable. It reaches the speed of max 10 miles per hour and has a motor of 2.25 HP. The tread belt is 50” long and 16” wide.

I really liked the basic digital read that shows time elapsed, distance, calorie burned and mph as you run. The only problem is that it isn’t backlit, so it is rather hard to read. It is fairly quiet and runs very smoothly. The six running presets function pretty well, and the button used to slow down the belt is useful.

If you don’t mind that this treadmill has pretty basic features, you will not have a lot of problems with it. However, the belt tends to slip sometimes, which can be very dangerous. Other than that, there are no cup holder or phone holder, and the handles are a bit low.

Pros

  • checkGood value for the money.
  • checkEasy to assemble and fold.
  • checkQuieter than other machines in that price range.
  • checkSix workout presets.
  • checkFairly comfortable to run.

Cons

  • exclamation-triangleThe belt can slip, and it’s prone to wear and tear.
  • exclamation-triangleNo interesting additional features.
  • exclamation-triangleThe screen is not backlit.
  • exclamation-triangleThe handles are installed low for an average runner.

3. ProForm ZT4 Treadmill – Budget Product from a High-End Brand

Via Amazon.com

View Product On Amazon

If you are searching for the best ProForm treadmill, you won’t find it in this price range, but if you would satisfy with a decent machine, this could be the unit for you. This is a budget machine, but it could be just what you need if you are training for half marathon on treadmill.

Unlike the previous products where the warranty is just a couple of months, ProForm offers five-year warranty on the most expensive parts of the unit (frame and motor), which speaks a lot about the product’s quality.

I’m amazed by the number of features offered by this treadmill, which include built-in fan, accurate heart rate monitor, iPod dock, and automatic incline control. With 2.75 HP, the motor is strong for its price range. The running surface is 50” long and 18” wide, which meets the average.

The treadmill is complicated to assemble, and the motor is very loud. Also, I’ve noticed that the belt tends to move on the left side of the platform. The interface is not sufficiently user-friendly.

Pros

  • checkTrustworthy brand.
  • checkFive-year warranty.
  • checkStrong motor and a decent running surface.
  • checkHeart rate monitor is pretty accurate.

Cons

  • exclamation-triangleIt is difficult to assemble it.
  • exclamation-triangleThe motor makes too loud noise.
  • exclamation-triangleThe belt is not stable.
  • exclamation-triangleI would wish to see a more user-friendly interface.

4. Weslo Crosswalk 5.2T – Two Products in One

Via Amazon.com

View Product On Amazon

Another Weslo product on this list, 5.2T is a unique product on this list. It is not only a treadmill but also a cross trainer. The arm bars provide additional resistance to your workout which makes the exercising more intensive and helps you burn calories faster.

It is equipped with manual incline with two positions, LCD screen, 10mph digital speed control, cell cushioning and a standard 2.2 HP motor. The running surface is 16”W x 50”L, which is enough for a person of average height. The treadmill has four workouts presets. It is foldable, so it doesn’t occupy a lot of space when it is not used.

I’ve noticed that after a couple of minutes of mid-intensity running (speed over 4 mph), the motor begins to slow down. Another problem is that the handrail tension doesn’t remain set, and it has to be adjusted before every workout.

Pros

  • checkHandles that provide a full-body workout
  • checkQuiet motor
  • checkSturdy for the price
  • checkThe controls are easily navigable

Cons

  • exclamation-triangleThe LCD is difficult to read
  • exclamation-triangleComplicated to assemble
  • exclamation-triangleThe motor suddenly slows down when the speed is above 4 mph
  • exclamation-triangleThe handles tension needs to be constantly adjusted

5. Confidence Power Plus – A True Bargain

Via Amazon.com

View Product On Amazon

This is one of the most affordable treadmills you can find, and for the price, it’s not half as bad. At this price range, you can’t expect some extraordinary additional feature, and the unit itself is very basic. It doesn’t have in-built exercise programs or a heart rate monitor.

It can be converted into a desk treadmill if you remove the handles. Besides standard black, it comes in pink color as well. The motor is 600W, and the running surface is 14”W x 38.5”L, which makes this treadmill more suitable for walking than for running. The maximum speed is slightly above 6.2 mph, which is significantly slower than the other products reviewed here.

I didn’t expect much from a product this cheap, but it does bother me that the motor overheats easily, and the treadmill stops working after thirty minutes. Other than speed adjusting, there are no other options to customize the exercising experience. There can also be some problems with the belt sliding.

Pros

  • checkIncredibly affordable
  • checkExtremely compact
  • checkCan be converted into a desk treadmill
  • checkRequires close to no assembly

Cons

  • exclamation-triangleThe running surface is too narrow for comfortable running
  • exclamation-triangleThe motor overheats easily
  • exclamation-triangleStops working after half an hour
  • exclamation-triangleNo additional options

Final Word

As you see, finding a good treadmill under $500 is challenging, but not impossible. Every one of these products has perks you can find to be useful for your workout habits. After thoroughly reviewing each of them, I find that Weslo Crosswalk 5.2T is the best treadmill under $500 because it provides you with two units in one. Besides running, you can do an upper-body workout and burn calories faster.

Footwear And Lower Back Pain: Where’s The Connection?

Rare are the people that haven’t experienced lower back pain at least once in their lifetime. And while the cause is sometimes pretty obvious – a recent sports injury is a good example – other times you might be left feeling clueless.

It’s entirely understandable if your feet aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when you’re experiencing lower back pain. I mean, how can something so far removed from your back possibly be the cause of your problems, right?

Wrong.

The connection between the two is much more prominent than you might realize, just because our bodies work as complex biomechanisms. And when you have all these parts working together, due to something called a kinetic chain, everything affects everything, meaning you can’t have issues with a particular section without it making an impact on your entire body.

That can be even more pronounced in runners because they partake in strenuous workouts, which is precisely why you should take the time to find the right footwear.

Note:

Since today we’re searching for the best running shoes for lower back pain, I’m not going to talk about the „dangers” of wearing flip-flops and high heels. However, keep in mind that all these types of shoes do is throw your entire body’s alignment off, and don’t support your arches.

Here’s How To Pick The Best Running Shoes For Lower Back Pain

Before you even start looking at different models in your search for the best running shoes for lower back pain, there are some things you have to consider first.

Don’t forget to do the following:

  • Get Your Feet Measured – I know most of you are perfectly capable of answering the question about their shoe size, but I’ve noticed (by observing family members and fellow runners) that people are prone to relying on past experiences in such occasions.

Everyone’s ready to jump to conclusions regarding their shoe size, without taking a moment to measure out their feet correctly, which often results in a wrong fit – especially with orders placed online.

To avoid that, please take the time to measure out your feet (both length and width) before you even start your search for the best shoes for lower back pain.

  • Check Your Arches – All you need to do is perform the so-called „wet feet” test. It’s a relatively simple test that doesn’t require more than a piece of thick paper or cardboard and, of course, your dampened feet.

Once you’ve left the prints of both your feet on the surface, take a moment to examine them – you’d be surprised at how much a simple test like this can tell you about your arches and, in turn, the type of shoes you’ll need.

  • Take Running Surfaces Into Consideration – Before you can decide which are the best running shoes for lower back pain, there’s one more thing you need to take into account: your preferred running surface.

For example, if you have a habit of running on packed sand or grass, you generally won’t need a lot of cushioning; the thing you should focus on is the support. Whenever you’re dealing with uneven terrain, you have to make sure your shoes will provide the much-needed stability.

Asphalt, on the other hand, requires a lot of cushioning – your best running shoes for lower back pain have to be able to reduce some of the impacts.

Searching For The Best Running Shoes For Lower Back Pain: Things To Look For

Here’s how to recognize the best running shoes for lower back pain:

Cushioning

Even if you’re more of a casual runner who likes to wear their running shoes during their daily activities, as well, chances are you spend the majority of your day on hard, unforgiving surfaces. Remember what I said about kinetic chains? Well, this is where it all comes to play.

When you’re running on hard terrain (asphalt, for example), every time your foot strikes the ground, it sends a tremendous impact through your legs and all the way into your spine. That’s why the best running shoes for lower back pain must have a proper amount of cushioning, that will absorb as much as possible.

Stability

The next vital characteristic to look for in the best running shoes for lower back pain is stability. Again, it all comes down to the way our bodies work. You need a supportive pair of shoes if you want to avoid damaging your knees and, in turn, prevent any future problems with your lower back.

Let’s just put it like this:

If you don’t feel like the shoes you have don’t provide any balance, they’re pretty much worthless.

Flexibility

Another, often overlooked, feature that the best running shoes for lower back pain should have is flexibility. You’d be surprised at how many people don’t quite understand the importance of having a flexible pair of shoes.

What’s the big deal, you ask?

I feel like a broken record, but ultimately, it’s all in the way your body moves as you run. Many people would think that rigid footwear is the way to go, but they couldn’t be more wrong:

Greater flexibility results in less stress on your entire spine, particularly your lower back.

Speaking of flexibility, it may be a good idea to perform some hip stretches for lower back pain. You’d be amazed at what a difference these stretches can make!

The thing many of my female readers fear when trying to find the best shoes for lower back pain is that they’ll end up with a pair that looks more like it belongs to their grandma. But let me assure you that won’t be the case with this Orthofeet model – these have all the benefits of an orthopedic shoe, minus the looks.

All of the significant advantages of these shoes are closely related to their soles and insoles. For instance, the bottoms are lightweight, yet provide a sufficient amount of cushioning due to the air pockets.

The insoles, on the other hand, are designed to conform to the shape of your foot. Moreover, they feature a gel pad located right under the heel, plus outstanding anatomical arch support.

The only issue is the sizing. These shoes run up to a size small, so to get the right fit, make sure you measure out your feet first (I told you it was something you should do, anyway), then go up half a size when placing the order. I’m pretty sure that will be enough to get the right fit.

Pros

  • checkAnatomical arch support
  • checkGel heel pad Insoles conform to the shape of your foot
  • checkOrtho-Cushion System makes the sole lightweight
  • checkAir cushioning
  • checkExtra depth keeps your feet stable
  • checkAnti-microbial fabric on the inside

Cons

  • They run a size small

Don’t worry, gentlemen, I didn’t forget about you! My second choice for the round-up is the Guide 10 running shoes by a brand known and loved by runners around the globe – Saucony.

But what makes them so unique that they deserve a place on my list of best running shoes for lower back pain?

As I said previously, flexibility is essential when you’re dealing with lower back pain. Saucony understands that – the Tri-Flex sole does not only make the shoes flexible, but it also helps disperse force over a greater surface area, too.

At the same time, the Everun sole provides an outstanding amount of cushioning, evenly distributed throughout the shoes thanks to the 8mm offset.

And if pronation is the cause of your problems, you’ll be glad to learn that Guide 10 addressed that, as well. You’ll notice how supportive these running shoes are as soon as you put them on for the first time.

These run small in size, though. Longterm fans of Saucony will also notice that this particular model, the Guide 10, seems a bit more narrow than their previous ones. Keep that in mind while you’re placing your order, and you should be fine.

Pros

  • checkTri-Flex sole allows outstanding flexibility
  • checkEverun sole provides cushioning
  • check8mm offset distributes cushioning more evenly
  • checkGreat pronation control
  • checkFlexfilm upper makes them lightweight

Cons

  • They run small in size
  • exclamation-triangleThey’re a bit more narrow compared to older models

What makes this Brooks model, the Glycerin 15, stand out from the crowd is the fact that they’re targeted at supinators. Since supination is so rare, yet able to cause a lot of problems for runners that have to deal with it, I was pleasantly surprised to find a pair targeted at this particular issue.

Thanks to the smooth transition zone, every heel to toe movement will feel a lot more comfortable, and soft, which often isn’t the case for supinators. On top of that, the upper, with its plush feel and 3D Fit Print design, will surround your ankle and give it the stability it needs.

Don’t worry about the cushioning, either. One significant improvement I saw in this model (compared to the previous ones), is the Super DNA midsole – it will give you 25% more cushioning than the older models.

Brooks is infamous for their shoes running small in size, though. To ensure you ordered the right size, go to your local shoe store and try a similar model, to see which size fits you. It sounds like too much work for an online order, but it will eliminate the possibility of having to return them if they don’t suit you.

Pros

  • checkSuper DNA midsole provides extra cushioning
  • checkSmooth transition zone
  • checkThey feature improved flexibility compared to previous models
  • checkComfortable and plush upper for extra stability
  • checkLightweight running shoes
  • checkExcellent for supinators

Cons

  • They are notorious for running small

Another candidate for the title of the best running shoes for lower back pain is the Ultraboost 3.0 by Adidas, and this one is for my male readers out there. I’ve had a few fellow runners recommend these shoes as a model to include on my list.

I’m pretty sure every avid runner has bought a pair (or at least considered it) at some point in their life. Here’s what makes them an excellent choice for those that suffer from back-related problems:

First of all, the responsive cushioning is there to make each step a bit more energetic, yet comfortable. At the same time, the combination of the Primeknit upper and the supportive cage will make sure your feet stay in place at all times. The same goes for Fitcounter design in the heel area: natural fit has never felt more natural.

Other than being a bit pricey (which, I think, is to be expected from a brand like Adidas), these shoes also feel quite narrow. Of course, I didn’t check this myself for obvious reasons, but I’ve had a couple of friends point this out when I told them I’m planning on including Ultraboost in my round-up.

Pros

  • checkUltralight Primeknit upper
  • checkResponsive cushioning gives energy to your steps
  • checkSupportive cage locks down your midfoot
  • checkFitcounter design of the heel area provides a natural fit
  • checkPerforms well in both dry and wet conditions

Cons

  • They are quite narrow
  • exclamation-triangleA bit pricey

Since I included a pair that’s perfect for supinators, it’s only fair that I offer overpronators a suitable option, as well.

What indeed makes them stand out is the amount of motion control they can provide. You’ll be able to sneak in a few extra miles without regretting it later when your lower back pain strikes.

Another thing worth mentioning is the cushioning. The heel area is exceptionally well cushioned (so is the rest of the shoe), and I’m sure you’ll notice the difference. That amount of cushioning is more than capable of reducing the impact running has on your ankles and, in turn, your lower back, to a minimum.

The best thing is they managed to do so without sacrificing flexibility!

The only real issue I’ve had with these is the toe box – it feels a bit narrow. And while it wasn’t much of a problem for me, some of you may not like it, so make sure you pick the right width. The same goes for length; since these do run a bit small, so go half a size up when you place your order.

Pros

  • checkMotion-control technology
  • checkPadded tongue and collar for comfort and ankle support
  • checkIncreased cushioning absorbs impacts
  • checkTorsional stability and arch support
  • checkProvides support without compromising flexibility

Cons

  • The toe box feels a bit narrow
  • exclamation-triangleThe size chart is slightly off
