Are You Running on a Treadmill Every Day? Get the Best Shoes for Treadmill Workouts!

I have already stated my opinion that I prefer running outside in the fresh air to running in the gym or at my home. However, I do own and frequently use the treadmill as it allows me to train even when weather conditions or lack of time prevent me.

Some people complain that running on a treadmill is quite boring and makes them feel like hamsters aimlessly running on their wheels. But, believe me, running, and even walking on a treadmill, can be very beneficial for you and your body.

Of course, running on a treadmill is very different to running on the road, and even the shoe companies have recognized this and started designing shoes specifically for treadmill running or walking workouts (be sure to check my best treadmill walking workout weekly routine).

If you too need to buy the best shoes for treadmill workouts, look no further, just read this article to the end, and you will find out how to choose such shoes as well as the five best shoes for treadmill currently selling on the market!

How to Choose the Best Shoes for Treadmill Workouts

Are you a designated treadmill runner? Maybe you are a fitness beginner and rely on the treadmill walking workouts to get you in the right form? Or, you are like me, a professional runner who relies on the treadmill only at the time of the utmost need. Whatever the scenario, if you use a treadmill you will need the proper shoes for it. (These are the best treadmills out there!)

It is easy to say that any shoes that are good for you when running outside will be good for treadmill workouts as well, but that will not be 100% TRUE. Namely, as I have already suggested, there are a couple of significant differences between road and treadmill running that will also influence the choice of the shoes you are going to wear in each of these occasions.

First of all, treadmill running, unlike running outside, does not require forward movement. Treadmill running actually affects only vertical displacement, and thus people who rely on treadmill running or walking workouts usually put more pressure on the heels of their shoes. For this reason, the best shoe for treadmill running or walking should be designed as to include more cushioning in the heel area.

You cannot simply stop running when on a treadmill like you can on the road. The treadmill needs time to come to a complete stop, so you do not want to encounter any problems with your shoes that need the immediate attention or dealing with.

For example, simple things like an untied shoelace can not only annoy you but also endanger you when on a treadmill. I thus recommend opting for flat laces when buying the best shoes for the treadmill. Why so? Well, flat laces have proven to be harder to untie on their own in comparison to the round laces. As they stay tied better there will be less chance that you will have to stop the treadmill and tie them, but also less risk of tripping over an untied lace in the middle of your workout!

Most of us also tend to run faster than we normally do when on a treadmill. As treadmills already add some risk to our running sessions, it is best to find shoes that are going to be stable and grip your feet well. The firm shoes are great for stretching exercise we all do prior to running (or should do at least). If you combine your treadmill running or walking workouts with weight training, firm and stable shoes are also a must!

However, the shoes needn’t be too rigid as you want them to be gentle on your joints. The best shoes for treadmill running should also be kind on your feet as so you do not feel any pain or discomfort after your workout. A snug fit and a feeling of lightness, while you run, will get you through your training with greater motivation and ease.

Lastly, if you want to seriously dedicate to treadmill running (or any other sport), you have to know what type of feet you have and buy the shoes that will suit you. General guidelines mentioned before are useful, but if you have a foot condition, injury or disease you have to find the appropriate shoes for that specific problem as well.

The most important factor to take into account is the pronation of your feet. The pronation shows the degree of the rotation of your foot while you run. There are two basic types of people when it comes to pronation. Some people have too much pronation, meaning that their foot rotation, while they run, is too much. Other people have insufficient pronation, meaning that their feet hardly rotate while running.

The best shoes for treadmill running or walking training should be in accordance with the type of foot you have, and therefore you should turn to professionals that will help you determine your type as well as choose the right shoes for you.

Choosing The Right Size of The Best Shoes for Treadmill

Now that you know what to consider when buying the best shoes for treadmill workouts, the only thing left to do is find the model and design you like and buy it in the right size. I need to warn you though that although finding the right size might seem easy it can be quite the opposite to that.

The problem is that different shoe companies have inconsistent sizing, and if you often switch brands, you need to be careful about that. Sometimes different models from the same brand have inconsistent sizing as well. To avoid mistakes, always try the shoes you want to buy.

The other important thing I want to mention is that shoes that you are going to use for treadmill running or walking workouts should be about 1/2 size larger than your standard shoes. This is actually a general rule when buying running shoes.

When you run your toys need extra space as to be able to move forward with every stride. If your shoes are tight, your feet will not be able to flex freely and after training your feet will be sore.

Do not overdo it though as too much space increases risk from injuries. Namely, if your shoes are too large, your feet and ankles will not be safe due to the lack of stability. Proper support is very important for treadmill running. If you get the size and fit right, your treadmill workouts will soon get better, longer and faster.

Although a bit pricey, Nike Free RN Flyknit shoes are well worth the money if you want to avoid sore feet after each treadmill workout.  They have a firm, single density midsole but also feature a generous level of midsole cushioning. The insole is standard flat Ortholite, and the foam material used for these Nike shoes is extra soft as well. As a result, they are supportive and comfortable at the same time.

The insole material is soft and of high quality, but a lot of attention has been paid to the outside materials as well. As a result, the outsole is very responsive but also well designed so that it will not accumulate too much dirt or trap pebbles if you use these shoes outside as well. The midsole has slightly raised sidewalls and thus supports the feet well.

Although toe-box seems to have enough room, a bit narrow and shallow forefoot can be a problem for people with wide feet, especially since the midfoot panels do not stretch. The heel has no support lining or foam but has some elasticity. Running in these shoes feels effortless even on long distances due to a thick and soft midsole.

The problem I have noticed is that these Nike shoes run at least half size larger in length. Whether the smaller size shoes will be even more narrow in the forefoot area, I do not know, and for that reason, I recommend trying these shoes on before you buy them!

Pros

  • check
    Generous cushioning
  • check
    Very lightweight
  • check
    Ortholite insole
  • check
Firm and supportive- great for treadmill workouts

Cons

  • A bit pricey

Run half size larger in length

    Narrow and shallow forefoot

As they come in six colorful designs, ASICS Women’s GEL-Contend 3 Running Shoes are a great choice for any woman wanting to dedicate herself to treadmill workouts at the gym or in the comfort of her home. Reasonably priced, they can be afforded by most of us as well. The feature that makes them perfect for treadmill running is the RearFoot Gel cushioning technology.

As we have already discussed, when you run on a treadmill the heel area of your feet comes into most of the contact with the treadmill's belt and thus suffers the pressure of almost five times your body weight. The generous cushioning inside these Asics shoes helps absorb all this shock.

When it comes to pronation, these shoes are perfect for all of you with under and neutral pronation. This means that they are designed to help you deal with the increased pressure on the outer foot. The removable Ortholite sockliner is another great plus.

The gel is not only in the heel but in the midsole area as well. This "midsole fluid ride" feature adds to the overall comfort. The outsole is made from rubber and will keep you safe from slipping on a treadmill, but also if you use them to run in the wet outdoor conditions.

The toe box on a regular model is spacious enough, and there is also an option to buy wider models for all of you with extra wide feet. They provide good arch support as well, and can thus be a good choice for people with Plantar Fasciitis. In my opinion, their durability is questionable.

Pros

  • check
    Available in multiple widths
  • check
    True to size
  • check
    Comfortable gel cushioning
  • check
    Good arch support
  • check
    Breathable

Cons

  • Designed for low-mileage runners
  • exclamation-triangle
The side to side support needs some improvement
  • exclamation-triangle
    Do not seem very durable

ASICS Men’s GEL-Nimbus 18 Running Shoes are a great model for treadmill running or walking workouts due to the heel clutching technology and gel-cushioning systems for both rear and front feet area. As one of the best running shoes for the treadmill, they will keep your feet in great condition even after the most intense workouts. The price is not over the top, but rather in accordance with the quality these shoes provide.

Seamless Construction without stitches and seams minimizes the possibility that irritation or blister occur during or after your workouts.  The choice of eight vibrant color combinations makes them look very appealing as well.

ASICS FluidFit upper technology means that upper mesh material stretches in all directions and thus fits like a glove. There are reinforcements that adapt to the athlete's foot too. Besides the fluid-fit upper technology, these shoes feature the fluid-ride midsole as well which gives you not only the extra cushioning but also a bounce back system for superb comfort.

Most importantly these shoes have excellent support of the heel area that gets under the greatest stress during treadmill workouts. The outer sole rubber material seems quite durable and skid resistant too.  The toe box seems a bit narrow, but the good news is that there are different widths to choose from.

Good for Plantar Fasciitis and people with high arches. Best suited for people with normal or under pronation. The top mesh material seems to be of very poor quality and hinders the durability of these shoes. They seem a bit heavy for running shoes as well, and that can be a problem and cause soreness for treadmill runners.

Pros

  • check
    Fit like a glove
  • check
Interesting design and choice of colors
  • check
Gel-cushioning systems for both rear and front feet area
  • check
Appropriate for people with plantar fasciitis

Cons

  • Narrow toe box
  • exclamation-triangle
Upper mesh material is not durable
  • exclamation-triangle
A bit heavy for treadmill running

The New Balance Men's MR993 Running Shoes are the first shoes reviewed here that are made from real leather. There are three colors to choose from, grey, black, and navy. The price is a bit high, but these shoes are very durable and will pay off over time.

Although they have predominant leather parts, they are actually made in combination with  mesh materials which makes them rather light. The rubber sole tracks rather well (although traction could be a bit better) and is quite durable and skid resistant. A heel made from single density polyurethane adds to the durability.

These New Balance running shoes feature a gel and foam combination cushioning which makes them softer on the inside but also helps them fit well; you will actually feel like you are wearing your socks only. The shoes are quite breathable too and will not make your feet sweat too much.  The generous Abzorb cushioning in the area of the heel as well as the forefoot area provides excellent support for treadmill runners.

The quality is evident,  and I am sure that these shoes will last long no matter how you use them- and you can use them outside as well! They provide energy return and will help you endure more intense workouts as well. The only complaint I have is that they lack a bit of flexibility and feel somewhat stiff.

Pros

  • check
Satisfactory cushioning for both forefoot strike and heel strike
  • check
Leather in combination with other high-quality materials
  • check
    Extra durable
  • check
    Classic look
  • check
    Made in the USA

Cons

  • Traction could be better
  • exclamation-triangle
Not suitable for those on a tight budget
  • exclamation-triangle
    Not very flexible

ASICS Men’s GEL-Contend 3 Running Shoes are another shoes made by this shoe company that deserves to be a part of the best shoes for treadmill group. This is because these ASICS shoes for have an exquisite ergonomic design and superb cushioning system protecting your feet from strain or injuries. They are good value for money although, like the other two Asics models reviewed previously, the upper mesh material makes them quite short-lasting.

The design is modern, and everyone can find a color combination to his liking due to twelve different options offered! The snickers are made from multiple mesh weave underlays but are still rather light and feature good breathability. If you wear orthotics, you can take out the removable sock liner and replace it.

The thing that makes them great for treadmill workouts is, once again, an excellent Rearfoot Gel Cushioning System which lessens the shock which occurs during the impact phase and eases the transition to midstance.

The toe box is wide enough to accommodate the toes, if you get the size right, that is. I think that they are quite short in length and narrow at midsole in comparison with other same-sized shoes and therefore I recommend going a whole size up.  The arch-support is adequate as these shoes firmly contour the feet. Your whole foot is firmly lined inside the shoe.

Pros

  • check
    Lightweight and breathable
  • check
    Can accommodate orthotics
  • check
    12 designs to choose from
  • check
    Reasonably priced
  • check
    Good shock absorption

Cons

  • A bit short laces
  • exclamation-triangle
Somewhat tight and short in length- not true to size
  • exclamation-triangle
Not very durable due to the low-quality mesh material
