Sharp Pain On Outside Of Foot; Diagnosis And Preclusion

Exercising is an amazing experience that makes you feel alive, and gives you that adrenaline rush. Running is a very healthy exercise that is helpful to our bodies. As a regular exerciser though, there are some challenges that come along with running. One of the challenges I have encountered is sharp pain on outside of foot.

Lately I have been experiencing sharp pain on outside of foot so I decided to do a little bit of research on what actually causes this. The pain is quite uncomfortable and stabbing. It is too much to ignore and is majorly focused on the outside region of the foot.

As an exercise enthusiast and runner, there is not much you can do if you are experiencing such high intensities of pain. I love working out and exercising. Most of the activities I do actually require footwork, but with sharp pain on outside of foot, it is next to impossible to get any exercise done.

What causes sharp pain on outside of foot?

When you experience pain on the outside of food, it may be caused by a number of things.

Achilles Tendonitis

This is injury or inflammation of the tendon at the calf of your foot. This tendon is the one used in doing normal physical activities like walking, running, jumping among other activities. Injury of the Achilles tendon leads to Achilles Tendonitis.

It causes you to experience sharp pain on outside of foot around the heel. This is a common cause of such excruciating pain. To understand more on Achilles Tendonitis,

Ankle sprain

90% of the sharp pain on the outside of foot is just from ankle sprains. Most people like thinking it something much more complicated when in real sense it is just an ankle sprain. Ankle sprains are caused due to injury of the ligament of the foot when we twist or roil the foot, causing an inversion injury.

Peroneal Tendonitis

This is one of the common causes of pain on the outside of foot. It is caused by injury, inflammation or overuse of the peroneal tendons. This sharp pain on the outside of foot does not just come at once. It is a gradual process that builds up slowly.

The pain starts to build up increasing over weeks or months depending on the intensity of the injury. The area affected is mostly tender when touched. The pain is mostly pronounced early in the morning when you wake up and stretch your muscles.

Plantar fibroma

Plantar fibroma is a knot found within the plantar fascia, which is a tissue that extends from the heel to the toes on the bottom of the foot. A plantar fibroma basically is an unwanted growth in the plantar fascia, so it is not supposed to be there.

It usually grows bigger with time if not taken care of early enough. Typically, you can’t see the growth at the bottom of your feet but you can feel the pain. They cause a lot of discomfort at the bottom of your feet, and when they grow, they may appear as small lumps.

With time as you wear shoes and continue exercising, you might experience pain and discomfort because of the pressure and friction from wearing shoes. With lack of treatment, the plantar fibroma becomes larger, causing more discomfort. This causes sharp pain on the outside of foot especially on the lower part.

Bunions are mostly associated with sharp pain on the outside of foot around the big toe. They are caused by the rotation of the big toe turning it inside towards the other toes. This results to injury and inflammation on the side of the foot where the big toe resides.

Most of the time it is characterized by redness and swelling of the big toe. It is accompanied by the sharp pain on the outside of foot, the area around the big toe region.

Ball of foot pain

Ball of foot pain is a result of metatarsalgia. It is caused by injury of the metatarsal bones or inflammation of those bones resulting to intense pain in the ball of your foot. This pain is transmitted to the outside of your foot causing a sharp pain on outside of foot.

Stress fractures

This is a common cause of sharp pain on the outside of foot. It is a result of small breaks on the bones of your foot, usually from strenuous exercises.

This is accompanied by sharp pain and inflammation. The swelling is quite visible and the hurt area is very tender. This pain starts out slow and progresses into something so painful with time.

What is the treatment for sharp pain on outside of foot?

Stretching exercise

Stretching exercises are usually recommended as treatment for such types of injuries. There are several stretching exercises like stretching your sole, shin stretching among others that come in quite handy.

They are a way of relaxing the muscles and the surrounding tissues of the heel. Stretching exercises are highly recommended since they are safe. If you do not know how to do them, consult a professional.

Icing the area

If the area is inflamed, applying ice on that area will help reduce the inflammation. Anti inflammatory is also quite helpful in lessening the swelling.

Lessen any form of strenuous activities

You should not press too much weight on your foot if you have such pain on your foot. Only do light activities and tone down in the exercises.

Physical therapy

If the condition does not cool down with time, visit a physician or any specialist who will help you with physical therapy. It usually works if the injury is not severe and has just started out.

Most of the times, this is always the last resort when the condition cannot be salvaged by any other method. This should always be the last resort and make sure whoever is performing the surgery is a professional to avoid further complications.

In conclusion

Sharp pain on outside of foot is not a foreign thing. It can happen to anyone at anytime. You should not be too scared to consult a specialist in case your situation does not improve through mild exercises. I hope the guidelines above are helpful. Keep safe and feel free to drop any suggestions or inquiries. Thank you.
